Xynergo, UPM-Kymmene & BTG-BTL share best practices in BTL Projects & Pilot Initiatives.

We have invited Europe’s leading BTL project developers to share an update on their planned BTL plants and Pilot projects.

First on the agenda is Gerhard Muggen from BTG-BTL, who will share an update on their planned pyrolysis plant in Hengelo, Netherlands. The plant will be the largest pyrolysis unit in Europe and the largest functioning plant in the world. According to BTG-BTL, the plant will process 5 tons of wood per hour, to convert to oil, steam and electricity.

You will also hear from Manfred Kessler, Senior Specialist Process Chemistry and Biofuels at Xynergo AS, on manufacturing Pyrolysis oil, which he describes as “A Possible Bridge to Large-Scale BtL Diesel Production

Xynergo, whose bio-crude plant in Follum Norway will be operational by 2011, plans to provide 14% of the total Norwegian demand for diesel, 10% of Norway’s demand for heating oil and optimise feedstock options for bio-diesel production.

On that note, we are excited to announce that UPM-Kymmene will be sharing an update on their “BTL concept development”. UPM is one of the world’s leading forest products groups, and in May 2007, they announced a co-operation with Andritz and Carbona on developing technology and building a biomass gasification and synthetic gas purification plant.

We have invited Pekka Jokela, Manager (Bioenergy/Biofuels) at UPM Kymmene to share an update on their ambitious project now in its second year. Mr. Jokela will touch on technology integration, gasification test runs, and update us on the status of their commercial plant.

4th BTLtec Also Shares Updates on Upcoming Biomass Conversion Technologies.

As the industry moves towards large-scale production, issues of cost and efficiency become critical, and technology is being developed to deliver optimum performance.

At 4th BTLtec, we shift the focus on some of the most exciting innovations in Biomass conversion technologies that are set to re-invent the entire Biomass-to-Liquids value chain!

On the agenda:

  1. Grant Hawkes, from Idaho National Laboratory will share an update on their highly efficient “Bio-Syntrolysis” process, which they claim coverts over 90% of the carbon in biomass to liquid synthetic fuel.  Conventional biomass gasification to liquid fuels converts around 35% of the carbon to liquid fuel. Grant will explain how “Bio-Syntrolysis” works in his eagerly anticipated presentation, “Developing Highly Carbon-Efficient BTL process combining high temperature steam electrolysis and Biomass gasification
  2. Prof. Fu Zhao, from Purdue University introduces the “Flexible carbon-to-liquid Fuel Process” he has developed with his team of researchers. The process is purportedly “more flexible” than existing conversion technologies because it can process a wider range of feedstocks and generates a wider range of products – including gasoline, diesel, ethanol and hydrogen.  At 4th BTLtec, Prof. Zhao’s session will explore the “Technical, Economic and Environmental Feasibility” of the Flexible carbon-to-liquid Fuel Process process.
  3. Prof. Eckhard Dinjus, Head of FZK (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe), shares on their UNINDO Award winning “bioliq” technology, speaking on “Using pyrolysis to generate ‘bioliq’ from wood waste and straw, and taking the bioliq process a step further.”
  4. Velocys will also update 4th BTLtec participants on their groundbreaking “Microchannel Technologyfor small scale FT conversion. In brief, Velocys is applying “Microchannel process technology”, a developing field of chemical processing to exploit rapid reaction rates by minimising heat and mass transport limitations. They achieve this by reducing dimensions of the reactor systems.  At 4th BTLtec, Velocys updates us on the status of their technology, and you can quiz them directly on integrating “Microchannel Technology” into your project!

4th BTLtec is the only conference where you can hear from the world’s top BTL technology developers including FZK (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe), Idaho National Laboratory, Purdue University and Velosys under one roof!

Imagine how you and your team can benefit if you were able to hear from, and question these leading technology developers about implementing these technologies for your projects.

By attending this 2-day conference, this exciting opportunity and more are yours!

Zoom into Latest in Biomass Gasification Methods! Innovations, Economics & Environmental Impact explored in 4th BTLtec.

Despite being over a hundred years old, Biomass Gasification remains one of the most popular (and proven) biomass conversion technologies.

In fact, there are organisations around the world that are working to improve on these gasification technologies, and at 4th BTLtec, we’re happy to present you with an opportunity to hear from the leading researchers in the field.

You will hear from:

  1. Dr. Ing. Reinhard Rauch, from Vienna University of Technology on “Status of BioSNG production and FT fuels from steam gasification.” Dr. Rauch is part of the European UNIQUE project, dedicated to the integration of particulate abatement, trace elements removal and tar reforming in ONE Biomass Steam Gasification reactor. Their aim is to develop technology capable of producing high purity syngas for efficient CHP and Power Plants.
  2. Poul Erik Hoilund Nielsen, Project Director at Haldor Topsoe will also share an update on the “Topsoe TIGAS Process for Biomass Gasification”. Topsoe’s integrated gasoline synthesis process – TIGAS – essentially converts synthesis gas (generated by gasification) to gasoline. Improving on the methanol-to-gasoline process, TIGAS converts synthesis gas into gasoline in a single-loop process, and eliminates the requirement for upstream methanol production and intermediate storage. Topsoe have combined this process with their synthesis gas technology and catalysts ensure optimised processes with low energy consumption.
  3. Prof. Dr. Ing. Jurgen Karl, President and Founder of Agnion Technologies GmbH will share a paper on his patented “Agnion Heatpipe Reformer” technology, an innovative approach he developed to address the central issue of heat input in Biomass gasification using Heatpipes. Prof. Karl will share on this state-of-the-art technology for producing and conditioning syngas for BTL synthesis and will provide an update on the first semi-commercial applications of his technology.
  4. We are also excited to highlight the session by Southern Research, who have applied “Syngas Cleaning” to improving the quality of BTL. Southern Research describes their process as “the key enabling technology for wide-spread application of integrated gasification combined-cycle technology for power generation and conversion of syngas to transportation fuel, fuel additives, chemicals, and hydrogen.”  Participants will be able to engage with Southern Research’s Director Steve Piccot, who will be sharing his perspectives on the topic at 4th BTLtec.
