BTL & Bio-Based Chemicals

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE | HOTEL | REGISTER NOW

Technology innovations to increase process efficiency continues to dominate and brings BTL a step closer towards commercialisation.

Why BTL & Bio-based Chemicals ?

In a seemingly boundless demand for sustainable energy, chemicals and materials, there is growing trend towards integrated biorefinery with production of chemicals being an important part of the economics . This year’s conference will expand beyond BTL and discuss the bio-based economy, feedstock availability, pricing, logistics and commercial viability for processing biobased products.

Focussing on the complete BTL production chain, CMT’s 5th BTL & Bio-Based Chemicals conference will offer insights on new projects In this comprehensive 2 day event, experts from project operator to technology developers, biomass traders , forestry, aviation industry to regulators will discuss following issues

  • New projects, biomass gasification challenges, gas processing, and conversion to synthetic fuel via FT process.
  • Thermochemical and biochemical conversion including Lanzatech unique technology using bacteria to convert waste gas to lowest cost liquid biofuel
  • European Commission’s technology roadmap on bioenergy and bio-based economy
  • The aviation industry is demonstrating its desire for biojet fuels but how close is BTL technology in winning this race ?
  • Modern biology and selective plant breeding will enable project developers like Choren to optimise composition of energy crops for greater thermochemical and economic efficiency in production of advanced biofuels. Ceres who is currently working with Choren on this project, will discuss on the fine-tuning of feedstocks which could have a tremendous impact on process economics.
  • Chemrec black liquor gasification in Pitea and scale up of the technology
  • Haldor Topsoe’s scheme on co-processing biofeeds with petroleum feeds to create an all hydrocarbon renewable diesel blend and new techniques to overcome limitations
  • One limitation of BTL processing is the mass yield of the end products. The Bure Saudron project will experiment with a novel solution to increase process efficiency – enhanced by the external input of hydrogen
  • Southern Research Institute biorefinery integration and scale up efforts
  • Metso’s project in Finland on the production of Biomass based Bio-oil

And many others.

Plus and Optional Site Visit to the ECN Petten Facility

BTL & Bio-Based Chemicals BTL & Bio-Based Chemicals

The visit will include the lab-and pilot-scale MILENA indirect biomass gasifiers (25 kWth resp. 800 kWth). Both gasifiers are equipped with the commercially available OLGA tar scrubbing technology and further gas cleaning equipment. The lab-scale infrastructure has been elaborately used to investigate the production of FT-liquids, and is now specifically tailored for the synthesis of Substitute Natural Gas (SNG).

Part of the visit will also include the entrained flow research facilities. The pilot-scale torrefaction plant PATRIG (50-100 kg/h) produces a high-quality and more homogeneous solid fuel from biomass, which can be efficiently fed into entrained flow gasifiers. The lab-scale gasification simulator is used to observe gasification, slagging and fouling behavior during biomass (co-)gasification in entrained flow gasifiers.
